Transitional Kitchen Design Styles

Transitional Kitchen: The transitional kitchen blends the traditional design sensibility with a contemporary flair. This style has been highly popular over the years mostly due to its clean classic lines where the kitchen’s focus is on comfort, function and practicality.

This style is now “transitioning” again by branching out from the familiar white and grey cabinet heavy kitchens to a more unique and eclectic design aesthetic. The melding of natural wood tones together with lacquered shaker doors, mixed metals and modern surfaces is a way to show your kitchen’s personality in a whole new way.

The transitional kitchen is moving away from the need to fill every wall surface with cabinetry and is now embracing the “negative space” in the kitchen. Incorporating open shelving, larger windows and unique wall surfaces in no way means that you will be compromising on storage in any way! Simply include space saving state of the art cabinet storage solutions into your new kitchen design plan!

Below are some of my favorite transitional kitchens for you to enjoy:

A shaker style kitchen from Harvey Jones (hyperlink) incorporates a combination of soothing painted cabinet colors and natural wood finishes into this comfy transitional kitchen space. Floating rough-hewn shelving, classic subway tiles and decorating the island face with books shelves creates a more eclectic vibe.

STUDIO WILLIAM HEFNER: A dash of French Country flavor was infused into this transitional kitchen recipe designed by Studio William Hefner (hyperlink). While the integrity of the overall kitchen space and design details exude a transitional design aesthetic, it’s the specialty finish of the white oak cabinetry, Calcutta gold countertop surface, walnut stained floors and iron embellishments that gives this kitchen its unique personality.

Richard Tubb Interiors
DUNGAN NEQUETTE ARCHITECTS and RICHARD TUBB INTERIORS The peaceful elegance of this space makes me want to nestle myself into the banquette and gaze out the window sipping my morning cup of coffee. Classic and unadorned details, with the combination of matte and polished surfaces are typically found in transitional kitchens. The combination of shaker style cabinetry, pencil edge countertop details and the modern professional kitchen faucet are perfectly appointed within this gracious home.

THE DESIGN ATELIER: A very chic and sophisticate grey, white and yellow kitchen features a stunning custom metal range hood perched above the sexy curves of the marble back splash. The modern recessed niche directly above the range is the perfect spot for oils and spices. The island details are more traditional in nature with the beaded shaker detail and the ogee edging on the marble island surface. The combination of traditional and contemporary is what defines the transitional kitchen.

LORI GILDER: This is the classic white transitional kitchen. The crisp white shaker cabinetry, walnut stained island, quartzite counter tops and modern architectural faucet bridges the gap between classic and modern styles.
